To celebrate Outdoor Classroom Day on the 17th May, we thought we would showcase one of our member groups who love helping young people get in touch with the outdoors.
Here’s what Mel Wheeler from Ascend Adventure and Bittern Meadow CIC had to say:
“Bittern Meadow CIC and Ascend Adventure offer meaningful experience in the outdoors. We create day or residential sessions for adults and young people incorporating practical conservation skills, learning about the natural world, outdoor mindfulness, games and play, and adventurous activities. Our core aims are to connect people with each other and the natural world.
We work at our beautiful four acre private meadow by the River Yare and organise expeditions to mountainous areas of the UK. We also support people to undertake adventurous challenges, including fundraising events.
There have been so many wonderful moments since we started running almost five years ago. Recent highlights include supporting a group of young people with a range of physical and psychological limitations, to successfully summit Pen-y-Fan in the Brecon Beacons. One individual in particular had been told by other adults that it wasn't possible for her to take part in such trips as she wouldn't be capable - her triumph at overcoming this judgement and proving it wrong was palpable!
We’ve had our challenges too. We are a very small organisation, with three staff and a small core group of volunteers. Learning how to run a business, having all the right policies and procedures in place, sourcing sufficient funding, maintaining four acres of land and delivering high quality experiences is both fulfilling and demanding.”
Why not take your youth club on a trip to Bittern Meadow to help them get closer to nature? Or if you’re feeling more adventurous, maybe you could take on the Three Peaks challenge with Ascend Adventure?
